Who are the Columbiettes?
On March 2, 1939 the first Columbiettes were instituted in New York City, where the Supreme Council resides. Locally, in the fall of 1991, a group of women met to hear about the Columbiettes from fellow parishioner, Margaret Wayman. On March 12, 1992, Bishop Greco Auxiliary was founded. Membership is by induction, dues are yearly and members receive a monthly newsletter.
The Columbiettes represent a unified body of Catholic women ages 17 or older that when initiated become members of a team who act as our “extended family”. Columbiettes provide emotional support to each other when needed. A Columbiette does not have to be married to a Knight of Columbus and in fact could be single, but our group stands ready to help our Knights of Columbus Council promote Holy Family and the community.
Benefits
The benefits of membership are many, including spiritual, moral, charitable, educational and social. We pray for each other and play together building lasting friendships and crucial support systems in our lives. Many hands make a lighter load when doing projects for our organization.
Parish Activities
In addition to our fun events such as our Ladies Night Out socials this organization is very active in our parish. These ladies can be found singing in the Choir, serving as Eucharistic ministers, ushers and lectors, working in the nursery and serving as catechists for our Faith Formation program. Many Columbiettes are members of the Bereavement Committee, Family Life Commission, Stewardship team and other commissions at Holy Family.
This organization has made monetary donations to parishioners in need, provided financial backing for the beautiful statues in the new church, donations toward the sound system and held a “stock the nursery” shower to provide our youngsters with new items for the nursery. In addition we helped stock the Kitchen. The Halloween Carnival for the parish children is hosted by the Columbiettes and the Mother/Daughter tea is as well.
Community Assistance
Each year the Columbiettes sponsor two Community organizations. Fundraisers for these sponsorships include two Clothing Sales, and smaller fundraisers such as cookbook, Butter Braids, pie sales and new ideas are always brewing. This year we gave $1,000.00 to Sally’s Angels to assist families with funds while their chronically ill children are receiving medical attention; Julian’s Beacon to help families needing financial assistance for food, lodging or transportation to evaluation centers with preference given to pediatric patients who have Pulmonary Hypertension and Tyler’s Hope who raises funds for neurology research to prevent and cure Dystonia.
In the past we have adopted Holy Family Youth, Holy Family Faith Formation, SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now), Riverwood Therapeutic Riding, Room at the Inn, Sertoma Deaf Camp; Dominican Sisters of Peru; Hand to Hand, Cancer Services, the Battered Women’s Shelter, Human Service Alliance and Hospice of Forsyth County, just to name a few. In addition we helped the Senior Stocking project of Clemmons for the last two years and collected diapers for Hand to Hand.
Meeting Location
Meetings are the 2nd Monday of each month (except July & August) at 7:00 pm in the Holy Family parish center. The Organization is made up of officers (President, Past President, Vice President, Secretary, Financial Secretary, Treasurer, Sentinel and Chaplain), Program Directors , and general membership.
